The Agony And The Ecstasy

Mr. Slave Driver is in heaven.

Okay, not literally. It's not like he died or anything. But he is in a constant state of euphoria. He loves, loves, loves his new dog, Luna, and couldn’t be more pleased with her.

Yeah, she pulls on the leash some, and she digs in the yard a little. But otherwise, she is smart, (he already has her trained to wait while he pours her food in her bowl, and wait still until he tells her, "Okay." Then she gets to eat.)

But she really is a joy, for us, and everything is fantastic… With one exception: Sammie Two Chews absolutely, unequivocally, and without one shred of doubt, hates her. Now, I know that my little dog has a, well, a little dog complex. She is suspicious of other dogs, and avoids them at all costs. When she was a puppy, because she's a Pom, I wanted to make sure she was socialized with people because we had had a problem with another dog not allowing anyone but family around. So I took her everywhere there were people. Soccer games, 4-H, AWANAS, you name it, that dog was exposed to people. The only dog she was exposed to was Cowboy. And all he ever did was stare at her. Now, the new dog, Luna, well, here you go:

So the things we thought were going to be a challenge (chewing issues, digging issues, I caught her sneaking out the dog door with one of my shoes...) will be nothing compared to getting Sammie to accept her.

It's a girl thing and has nothing to do with like or dis like Sammy being first and oldest is there for the lead bitch. Rosie did it to belle lua does it to belle. Cowboy and Sammy had no contest cause they were boy and girl

Sammie isn't charging Luna! That's really, really good. Sammie seems to be protecting herself, not being aggressive towards Luna. And probably Luna is working extremely hard to herd Sammie. So maybe Sammie will mellow out, given more time.

This is why I am getting my Rott and my dane as puppies together. The dominance issues would be a little too intense, otherwise. I have enough problems with my cats versus the sib's cats.

Poor Puma, the toothless wonder, will never be on good terms with Bandit, the many toed freak.

Ahh, Sammie is one tough little cookie. She sounds like an angry squirrel. Luna is so gentle. What a doll. I bet they will become good friends in time.

An angry rabid squirrel... and every time Luna walks into the bedroom that angry chittering sound comes from under the bed...

So adorable.

When Peaches was a puppy she always wanted to play with the cats, and loved other dogs. Now if another dog comes into the house (like my brother's puppy), she acts like I'm trying to skin her alive. Definitely should have gotten her a friend when she was little because now she doesn't want one.

Yep, it definitely looks like Sammie is doing the alpha female thing. Luna will win her over... eventually.

Lovely video SD. I don't think there's too much to worry about. At least it doesn't look like it. Time will tell who wins whom over. Good luck with that. :-)

This is so funny. And Sammy looks so proud of herself at the end of the video. Luna seems very good natured.

Nah...Sammy is just telling Luna to back off and respect her space. She is showing leadership by standing her ground and not backing away, but Luna isn't taking her seriously because she's sammy is so small. It's your job to back up your "pack" (i.e. Sammy) and tell Luna to find a different game. That way Sammy will feel less threatened if she knows you're protecting her and there will be less friction between the two. She won't feel like she always has to be the one to "Correct" the unruly pup if you take charge and do it first.
